MEROVINGIAN COIN PENDANT
This is a Merovingian Frankish gold coin, type Belfort 2465-7, minted in Marseilles during the reign of Chlotar ll who ruled that kingdom from 613-629. It has been modified to a pendant with the addition of a hanging loop by an Anglo-Saxon goldsmith. It was found close to an Anglo-Saxon settlement at Carlton Colville and acquired by Lowestoft Museum in 1976. It is a rare example of a high status object seemingly indicating that a person of some importance once wore it.
